What are categories A and A1?
1?
According to Russian legislation, in order to drive a motor vehicle, a driver must undergo training and obtain a license of the appropriate category. Failure to comply with these conditions is equivalent to driving without a license and entails administrative penalties. Today, the Autoconsultation magazine has focused its attention on category A and A1 driving documents – what they are, how they differ, and how to get them.

Classification of categories of rights to drive motor vehicles
The required category is determined by the parameters of the vehicle that is supposed to be driven. Based on this parameter, the following options are distinguished:
- Category M. Its opening gives the right to drive a scooter or moped whose engine capacity does not exceed 50 cm³. Persons over 16 years of age can obtain a driver’s license, but training at a motorcycle school is allowed even earlier. Since category M opens automatically upon receipt of any driver’s license, training courses for moped drivers are not in demand, and groups take a long time to be recruited.
- Driving document category A1. Makes it possible to drive light motorcycles whose engine capacity does not exceed 125 cm³. Such rights can be obtained by persons who have reached the age of 16 after completing training and passing exams. From a practical point of view, it makes more sense for drivers aged 16-18 to open category A1, in addition to receiving category M.
- Category A. After reaching the age of 18, you are allowed to drive any motorcycle without any power restrictions. To do this, you will also have to undergo training at a motorcycle school and exams at the traffic police, but as a bonus you will receive the right to drive vehicles of categories M and A1.

Thus, category A of driving documents is universal and covers other motorcycle categories. If you have reached the age of 18, then it makes sense to open it, automatically receiving the right to drive light motorcycles and scooters.
Procedure for training for driving license categories A and A1
To obtain driving documents, you need to contact a driving school that has a license to teach driving motor vehicles. It is allowed to learn to drive scooters and light motorcycles from the age of 14, but only citizens who have reached the age of 16 are allowed to take the traffic police exam. For heavy motorcycles, the age for training is 16 years and for obtaining a license is 18 years. The educational process includes the following stages:
- Theoretical part. During the classes, future motorcyclists receive information about traffic rules, safe control and operation of motorcycles, and the design of motorcycle equipment. The program includes skills in providing pre-medical care and coverage of the legal aspects of road traffic. Students will also learn about the correct selection of equipment.
- Practical part. Classes take place on a racing track, where students master the skills of starting, braking, safe driving tactics and hone exam exercises. The standard program includes 10 academic hours of driving, but their number may vary from school to school.
- Internal exam. This stage provides an opportunity to cope with anxiety and practice before the main exam at the State Traffic Inspectorate.
Bonus
Driving schools independently submit documents and schedule an exam to the traffic police. During the examination process, students are supported by a school representative, and the practical stage is taken on a familiar motorcycle.
Exam procedure: what to prepare for
According to current standards, the exam can be taken in any department, without being tied to the place of registration or training. If you intend to do this separately from the motorcycle school, you should keep in mind that not all traffic police departments have their own motorcycle fleet, so this point needs to be clarified.

Package of documents
To obtain admission to the examination process, the following documents must be provided to the State Traffic Inspectorate:
- Identity card. The standard is a passport, but along with this they are required to accept a serviceman’s ID or military ID (for employees of the RF Armed Forces).
- Medical report. The certificate must indicate that the medical examination has been passed to obtain a driver’s license of category A1 or A. Read more about obtaining a medical certificate in this publication.
- Statement of the established form. The form to fill out can be downloaded from the traffic police website or obtained from the MREO.
- Certificate of completion of driving courses of the appropriate category.
- Receipt of payment for the exam.
Direct your gaze
Previously, drivers with a different license category were allowed to take the exam externally, without having attended a driving school. You can find out more by following this link: prava112. com/kategorii-a-i-a1 this rule has now been abolished, and all drivers are required to complete the courses.
Theoretical Exam
To successfully pass the theoretical part of the exam, you should prepare not only during classes at the driving school, but also independently. Phone apps are quite convenient for this; in them, applicants answer exam questions, and the program identifies errors and suggests difficult questions more frequently. The exam procedure itself is as follows:
- The exam is taken on a computer connected to the central server of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. MREO employees cannot influence the answers.
- From a database of 800 questions, 20 are randomly selected for the examinee to answer. No more than two errors are allowed. The questions cover not only traffic regulations, but also motorcycle operating rules, legal nuances, and principles of providing first aid to accident victims.
- If the test is successfully completed, the examinee is admitted to the practical portion. If there are more errors, a retry is permitted no sooner than a week later. If three attempts are unsuccessful, the examinee will have to attend motorcycle training again. A successful test is valid for three months, during which time the practical portion must be passed.
Practical Exam

Paying the practical exam at the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate is an exciting experience for novice drivers who lack confidence and automatic driving skills. The main and significant difference between the practical portion and the practical portion for drivers applying for a motorcycle license is the absence of an examination stage under real road conditions. The practical test is taken only at the driving range and involves completing the following tasks:
An exercise that tests driving along a clearance corridor, a clearance semicircle, acceleration, and braking.
- The second exercise tests low-speed driving skills, rutted roads, and snaking.
- The final exercise is a figure-eight.
- Before the exam, you must be given 2 trial minutes necessary to get used to the motorcycle and the track. All mistakes made at this time are not taken into account by the inspector, and if the driver feels unprepared, he has the right to refuse delivery on such a day. After the start of the practical part, all errors are recorded by the examiner according to the following gradation:
1 penalty point is given for blocking the wheel in front of the stop line, in case of failure to give a brake signal by hand, or failure to turn on the low beam.
- 3 penalty points will be given to drivers who did not put the engine in neutral while the engine was running, did not change gear on time, did not give a turn sign in a timely manner, hurried while driving at low speed, or allowed the engine to stall when starting.
- 5 penalty points are awarded for failure to follow the driving path, knocking down limit cones, crossing or running into markings or a stop line, touching the surface of the race track with your foot, stopping further than 40 cm from the stop line.
- Допускается получение не более 5 штрафных баллов. If their number is exceeded, the person is sent to retake only the practice.
