The new driver’s license form includes a special column indicating the category of the vehicle. In addition to the standard transport groups (A, B, C and D), new subcategories have been introduced in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Law “On Road Safety”. These categories include public types of tram (Tm) and trolleybus (Tb) vehicles. What does it mean? The Tb category on a driver’s license confirms that the driver is ready to drive public transport and passenger transportation.
Specifics of training
Trolleybuses are characterized by the fact that they are used only in urban transport infrastructure. Not all regions have access to specialized training for this category. This type of trackless electric transport is environmentally friendly and has many economic advantages over trams.

Features of the training program
After a positive psychological test, candidates in the Tb category are allowed to study the curriculum.
The professional training program consists of four blocks
- Theoretical classes (general topics such as road safety, traffic rules, vehicle control systems, basic medical knowledge, first aid rules).
- Practical part (simulator training with an instructor, learning how to drive a vehicle), at least 45 days.
- It is checked by traffic police officers on theoretical questions using computer tests.
- Development of skills for transporting passengers in a trolleybus in real traffic situations (maximum 45 days).
IMPORTANT! The training process in the TB category differs from standard training in a driving school. Professional training to open TB category runs continuously for six months full-time, with breaks for production. Therefore, in most cases, cadets undergo training in the direction of the company paying the scholarship.
Mandatory theory requirements
In addition to knowing the rules of the road, trolleybus drivers also need to know
- Rules for handling high-voltage electrical equipment;
- basics of labor protection and requirements for the operation of electrical equipment.
- Characteristics of trolleybus operation;
- functional mechanisms of trackless vehicle components in electric drives (for example, brakes, tie rods, ballast, auxiliary electrical equipment, etc.).
Practical skills
Trolleybus operators need to master the following basic skills, taking into account the large passenger flow and transport infrastructure of a particular city
- Stops (including unexpected ones);
- Turning maneuvers;
- Braking;
- Cornering;
- Acceleration.
IMPORTANT! Although the law does not define length of service requirements for trolleybus drivers, the age limit (21 years) limits the opening of the TB category.
